H&E program is responsible for keeping its finger on the pulse of the nation’s current agro-chemical situation. The department’s purpose is to raise awareness and educate the Cambodian public about the negative impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticide in agricultural product/food, as well as to develop organic standards, certification and internal control system.
Pesticide Community Monitoring in Cambodia: The program organizes training workshop for farmers, key farmers, community facilitators, commune council members and local authorities and follow up chemical fertilizer and pesticide use in community.
CEDAC staff and community facilitator staff interview farmers’ households in the target areas to make farmers aware of the effects of pesticide on their health and the environment, and to observe the trade of illegal and hazardous pesticides in Cambodia.
Public Awareness Dissemination on Food Safety: In collaboration with the Radio Sarika FM 106.5 MHz station; and P&C program broadcasted a weekly live show program called Farmer and Nature to support the development of ecological agriculture. Furthermore, H&E interviews both local and international media to provide the public and policy makers with a wider understanding of the uses and problems associated with pesticide use in Cambodia and progress of organic agriculture.
To educate the public on the issue, H&E organizes many events including workshops, and meetings with consumers, youth/students and farmers.
Organic Production Quality Control and Certification:
H&E supports organic producers by organizing trainings on organic agriculture techniques such as green manure, pest management and post harvest management. The program set up an internal inspector group to inspect and certify organic agriculture on a montly basis. It also keeps a database for the internal inspection system.
H&E has also coordinateed international certifiers to inspect and certify CEDAC organic rice producer groups in Takeo, Kampot, Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces for export to foreign markets with the NOP-USDA and EU regulation and Fair TSA certificates.
Networking and advocacy:
Pesticide Reduce Network in Cambodia (PRN-C), as a core team leader, participates in the bi-monthly meetings with its 36 members to review and prepare an action plan to reduce pesticide risks and monitor the other policies and laws relating to agriculture. The main activities of the network are organizing the NGO Position Papers on agriculture and water sector to join with other sectors for summiting to RGC and Development partners.
As a partner of Pesticide Action Network of Asia Pacific (PAN-AP) CEDAC has attended 2 workshops in Malaysia for pesticide task force meeting and PAN AP’s KEMI Partners Steering Group Meetings, to share information and action plans for pesticide risk reduction program.
Additionally, the Toward Organic Asia Network was inaugurated in Bangkok with CEDAC as a member. CEDAC has facilitated meetings among NGOs supporting organic agriculture and was instrumental in creating the sub-group “Toward Organic Cambodia.”
